I built a portable Windows 11 install on an external SSD, and you can do it too

Want to run Windows 11 directly from a USB stick or external SSD? Perfect for travel, testing, repairs, or keeping a clean OS anywhere. In 2026, Microsoft still doesn’t officially support “Windows To Go”, but Rufus makes it super easy and fully functional.

I tested this exact method in March 2026 with Windows 11 25H2 on a 128GB external SSD — boots fast on any PC (even older hardware) and runs like a normal installation.

⚠️ Important Warnings

  • All data on the external USB/SSD will be erased.

  • Use a fast drive: USB 3.1+ or external SSD (64GB minimum, 128GB+ recommended for good performance).

  • Performance is excellent on NVMe external enclosures, slower on cheap USB flash drives.

  • Works on unsupported PCs (Rufus bypasses TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and RAM checks).

What You Need

  • External USB drive or SSD (fast one!)

  • Computer with internet

  • 20–40 minutes

Step 1: Download the Official Windows 11 ISO

Go to the official Microsoft site and download the latest ISO (no product key needed for installation).

Tip: Choose the multi-edition ISO (Home/Pro) so you can select during setup.

Step 2: Download the Latest Rufus (2026 Version)

Download the portable version (no installation needed) from the official site: rufus.ie

Step 3: Create the Portable Windows 11 USB

  1. Plug in your external USB/SSD.

  2. Open Rufus (run as administrator).

  3. Device → select your external USB/SSD.

  4. Boot selection → click SELECT and choose the Windows 11 ISO.

  5. Image option → change from “Standard Windows installation” to Windows To Go (this is the key for full portable install).

  6. Leave Partition scheme as GPT and Target system as UEFI (non CSM).

I installed Windows on a flash drive and it ran fine

  1. Click START → confirm the warning (data will be erased).

  2. Wait for the process (10–25 minutes depending on drive speed).

Step 4: Boot from the External USB

  1. Restart your PC and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually F2, F10, Del, or Esc).

  2. Go to Boot tab → set your external USB/SSD as first boot device.

  3. Save and exit (F10 + Enter).

Step 5: Complete Windows 11 Setup

The normal Windows setup will start. Create your account, choose Home or Pro, and you’re done!

Your portable Windows 11 is now ready — unplug and plug into any PC and it works!

This method is 100% free, safe, and updated for Windows 11 25H2. Works better than paid tools like WinToUSB.
